here's a maxscript I've been working on to handle the PMD format in max. I have to figure out how to import animations still. anyway GUI'd the script, just drag and drop the *.ms script into max and a float box will popup.. and obviously select import to get a PMD into max.
Script Supports Import and Export of the PMD format. Some features are missing, although basic import and export should be possible
there are some limitation, that I will address later which can cause problems with export.
However I will continue to work on the script to better script functionality.
Feel free to drop feed back or questions.
PS> if you don't know what mikumikudance (MMD) is, its a free animation creator made by some japanese guy. awesome enough, these guys created some pretty sweet models! and now they can be accessed through max.
enjoy!

Sweet. Thanks Mario! I've wondered about the MMD model skeletons, and if they all have the same base bones or something, since I often see different models doing the same dance.
though I'm having alot of problems with getting it to work.. if i follow the positions and rotations from the animation file, my bones get torn apart O_o..
I just don't have any experience with importing animations, I've been tying to find other maxscripters to help.. but so far no luck

So from there maybe it's possible to output to a format that Max likes?
I am having trouble locating the MMD starter pack characters and the windows 100% characters so I may have to buy the magazine and starter pack off of amazon.
I live in Japan so I wont get stung on shipping
figuring out how to read the data from the file isnt the problem.. its interpreting it in max.. I just don't know how to properly script it.
also I got a few of those windows models from another guy. I can send you what I have if you want. won't be the official starter pack, but atleast its a start.
if you have msn, add me

thanks for writing this script!
MMD works with VMD Files, wich are basically animation files, they hold positions of certain bones, as example:
"LeftArm" x=6 y=3 z=8 first frame
Rigging models on MMD allows you to name them the same, and save VMD motion datas to load them on different models, the only requirement is that the second model must have a bone with the same name as the first, this makes things easier.
