In all seriousness though, there's this couple I know, I think they're only a year or two older than I am, and they're already expecting a kid (so either that invalidates my above statement, or I'm far older than I thought I was ).

Indeed. I used to think these couples that were around 22 years old and expecting a baby were foolish youngsters, when I was 22 and still studying biology. But then I realized that many people start to work full jobs from around their 18th (after high school/college) and don't go to university or other type of higher education that will prevent them from participating in full time employment. So at age 22, after already been working for 4 years, perhaps even together with the same partner since, it's not that strange to start having kids. Heck, my own parents were 18 and 19 when they first got my sister. (Compare to 31 when I got my first....it's a matter of opportunity and career, I guess).

You studied biology?

I'd assume so, considering for awhile there his career had something to do with the human brain, as I recall.

You studied biology?

Yeah, graduated in neurophysiology and medical physiology in 1999.

Then became a PhD-student on a neuroimmunological subject and studied the (molecular) function and pharmacological properties of an orphan chemokine receptor we suspected to be involved in the central nervous system disease multiple sclerosis (MS).
I defended my thesis ( http://dissertations.ub.rug.nl/facultie ... mRecord=ON ) in september 2003 and was promoted to PhD. From 2003 to 2007 I was a post-doctoral research fellow studying the genetic complex traits associated with renal and cardiovascular disease. Currently, I work for a big international pharmaceutical company to assist with and set up studies with promising new products in oncology.

Nice! I like the AI projects. As a fan of Asimov's books, especially the robot novels, I've always been interested in robots and AI. I'm also a fan of Star Trek, and am fascinated by Data, the android in The Next Generation. In particular, the philosophical questions that arise when one starts to define Life and it's requirements. We consider amoeba as living organisms, but suppose we create a robot that has similar self-sustaining properties, then, would we call it alive? If we give it some form of AI and it would equal the intelligence of a primate, how would that affect the robot's rights? These questions were discussed already in length by Asimov in his books, and in Star Trek they have returned many times.

At some point we will come at this cross-roads. It will be interesting to see how we as humanity will proceed when we do.
