.NIF is a format used by the Gamebryo engine, which powers the likes of Oblivion, Morrowind, (which you seem to have mentioned here) Sim City 4, etc. . As I understand, it's pretty capable, with LOD, bones animation, model elements/subsets, etc. What exactly did you want to know about it?
