the SIZE table must exist for sure, if you search the bytes "88 02 00 00" (size of the first file) you must find them for sure or at least I hope :)

quickbms will load them automatically, you must not rename them.
just use the reimport feature as usual by clicking on the reimport link or by creating a link by yourself as explained in the section 3 of quickbms.txt

the games installed in "c:\Program Files" are accessible in write mode by the administrator usually so if you want to edit them you must run any editor/program (like quickbms too) as administrator. anyway if the original file is 8.8 kb you cannot replace it with a bigger one. the rule is: ...

the version of quickbms is not important, so the current one is ok (and suggested).
if you can, please upload one of these slak archives that give the zlib problem on a files hosting website and I will take a look at it.

if the file is smaller than the original quickbms automatically cleans the remaining space filling it with zeroes

@michalss he intends something completely different. in short you can't increase the size of a file to reimport without touching all the rest of the file format because this is exactly like having a puzzle and you can replace a piece with a smaller one but you can't replace it with a bigger one with...
