In addition, anything that can be done with those features unlocked by a MultiEx key can be done manually, it's just often harder or more tedious to do so.

Well, I can't help you much with tutorials about modding, but what MexCom allows you to do is extract resources from supported files so you can edit them with other programs, and for select formats, it also lets you repack or even create your own archives.
