is it possible that get NAMESZ byte is actually the wrong value? it could just be a null-terminated string at the position you have. other filenames work because quickbms treats the string as a c-string anyway.. so any larger filenames are accepted, but trimmed to the first 00 byte. something like g...

hey

the .mif files have valid zlib chunks which you can extract with offzip:

How have you verified the files are never loaded? They may be in memory in multiple places - can you modify existing items?

Also does this game have its own scripting language? Any logic in data anywhere?
