I was of the same impression as you TruckerHatRyan - while the game clearly triggers it on camera, it seems like it's the equivalent of the fv2 hide model functionality, and the fmdl submodel hide functionality (as shown by the svs body models). Otherwise if it was a hardcoded reference you'd think...
