Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

Veegie, source quads?? you think everything is modelled in quads and nothing else works? I imagine the originals were nurbs and then transformed to triangle mesh. quads are not required for something to look good and it's not the source of the problem unless I'm mistaken. which is basically impossib...

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

Diatribal, I haven't worked with the data nor do I have them. otherwise I would help : )
but with the first pages of this thread and the internet I'm sure you can figure it out

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

I have experience with the .3ds format. it's limited to 65536 vertices and faces per element. might not work for these models.
unless you mean .max?

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

veegie, of course you know that typical 3d editors have no vertex normals right.. I think I understand the situation just a bit better than you do. forget about smoothing, normals and geometry precision for now. just extract the geometry as is and get the materials and UV mapping right. then we can ...

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

Ernegien, there are several useless posts here but you reacted to the one that made you a hypocrite. he would like to play with the models just as you do. you were probably just afraid of how other hypocrites would react.. :) btw come to think of it, my guess is you can find a torrent of the game an...

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

Ernegien, let's not pretend what we are doing doesn't violate what the stiff suits want. extracting the models is ripping and playing with the models is not the same as pirating the game.
let's not be hypocrites.

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

think of a surface made of legos. it is stepped. but if you clothe the points in normals that can have any direction and interpolate between only the normals then the shading will look as if the surface is smooth. it is not a smoothing group issue. the vertex normals cloak the precision problem. tha...

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

Ernegien, that's definitely wrong. the precision doesn't improve like that in multiplication. it's a bit complicated to say what the exact step size is because x y and z is not just limited to +-1 they appear to be limited to length 1 of the xyz vector and then scaled. so z y and z are not just free...

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

minime, we think it's a vertex position precision problem. the reason it looks good to begin with seems to be that max can use the 'fake' vertex normals that are also used in the game to make the surface appear smooth even though the geometry actually isn't smooth. so what you are seeing to begin wi...

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

tomwin, as I have stated several times, because the vertices are only in 16bit format they have precision issues. it can perhaps be handled with a very fancy algorithm that tries to reconstruct the lost precision using the vertex normals as help and the general shape of the geometry. that's not an e...

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

Ernegien, do you export to .max? does .max support vertex normals? I wouldn't think it does. btw when multiplying the coordinates with the scale factor, do you convert both values to 32bit float before multiplication? just to be sure no additional precision is lost. the 16bit floats are not very pre...

looks nice veegie. I guess someone found the offset or did you rearrange the objects manually?
has material name been loaded too or also all manual?

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

Veegie, nice. thanks. some of it is probably just low poly count but there does appear to be some precision issue. maybe be forced to fix that if possible.
how about a full view from eye height? how bad is that

Re: [Xbox 360] Forza 3 Resource Extraction Tool (.carbin)

Veegie, I know the situation. smooth it, render it. show us. you got that? :) with a polished material on and a contrast filled environment like an HDRi blue sky with white clouds on. this is the critical test the geometry will have to pass for photorealism use. this will allow us to see just how cr...
